Will leaving my keys in my car invalidate my theft cover?
Don’t be complacent when you leave your vehicle – even in remote areas.
Car thieves love the countryside for a different reason – rich pickings. You would be surprised by the number of cars that are stolen from:
- farm yards,
- tracks,
- field boundaries and
- even when the driver gets out to open a gate.
Thieves will and do watch your habits and lurk behind bushes.
With regard to cover, every insurer has a “duty of care” clause in their policy and can potentially avoid a claim if the keys are left in the ignition, or other equally obvious places such as the top of the wheel arch or behind the sun visor. Some policies are more specific in their terms.
Every circumstance is different and every one is considered on its own merits.
What you can do is make it harder for the thief. Most modern manufacturers go to great lengths and expense in fitting alarms & immobilisers but all that is for nothing if you leave the keys in the ignition.
It’s time to kick the habit.
