Why Farmers and Mercantile

“Farmers and Mercantile saved me 30% on my annual insurance bill. Their personal service could not have been more helpful and they have kept the renewal premiums sharp.
Like many farmers I was concerned that any claim submitted would be paid efficiently and without unnecessary quibbling; I can now say that this has indeed been the case – on more than one occasion.”

Here are just some reasons why you should use Farmers and Mercantile:
- Sensible premiums, especially where your claims history is good we are able to obtain bespoke cover whilst at the same time improving the cover and offering the best all round deal.
- All of our brokers have practical farming knowledge as well as insurance expertise. See our Broker Profiles
- We are independent brokers therefore we search the insurance marketplace on the client’s behalf to find the best combination of cover and competitive premium.
- On-farm reviews, as part of our quotation process we visit your farm to assess your insurance needs. At renewal each year we re-visit in order to update cover and take account of all changes to our client’s business.
- Our claims service is an area within the business upon which we place great emphasis, potential claims are the sole reason people insure. We represent our client in the event of a claim and ensure fair and prompt settlement.
- Paperwork – another advantage of the cover offered by us is that we can underwrite all of your insurable risks on a single policy to include; vehicle fleet, farm buildings, farm property, loss of income, liabilities, personal accident, houses and contents etc – greatly simplifying the paperwork involved and in turn reducing your premium cost.

Still not sure if we are the right insurers for you, then here are a couple more reasons why you should let Farmers and Mercantile insure your farm:
- We, as brokers, act as the go-between for farmers and rural business owners and the major insurers. Our role is particularly important when on-farm businesses evolve and enter into areas not normally covered by the ‘standard farm policies’. We have presented many new risks to Insurers over the years and negotiated fair terms and cover at a price that is viable for the new enterprise. We are able to do this because we have built relationships of trust with insurers whereby they recognise and respect our knowledge of farming practices coupled with our concise understanding of the principles behind insurance.
- We are an independent broker, so can negotiate price, terms and cover with multiple insurers and tailor the policy to suit your business needs. When we write ‘we try to save you money and increase your cover’ and our products are robust, up-to-date and backed up by the largest of blue chip insurers. Whereas a broker/agent that is tied has no option but to present to you the price, terms and cover that are quoted from their single insurer.
In short – ask your broker/agent how many quotations they obtained when preparing your insurances.
What's the usual process for getting a Farm Insurance quote?
Well Many farmers make an initial enquiry with us via a referral from an existing F&M client or because they have decided to obtain an alternative quotation.
90% or our clients and potential clients receive an on-farm visit, whereby their broker assesses their risks year on year, this is very important to ensure values insured are correct (the rare exception to the farm visits are generally smaller farms if the risks can be assessed very quickly on the telephone).
Once your broker has visited your farm and obtained all of the necessary information he/she will return to their office and prepare presentations from multiple insurers. Upon receipt of the quotations from insurers the broker will then asses the price and terms offered and recommend the best all round deal, it is never based on just one area but must encompass the best of price, terms and cover combined.
Once you accept the quotation that you feel is right for your business, cover begins, and you relationship with F&M also begins. We are just at the end of the phone when you need us for mid-term adjustments or should a claim arise. Our existing clients will attest to our high levels of customer service and we are happy to provide you with references from farmers in your area.
